Dear UCLA Labor Center community,
Across Los Angeles, immigrant communities are facing escalating threats and uncertainty. In recent days, workplace raids conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies have led to the detention of hundreds of community members—disrupting daily life, separating families, and spreading fear throughout homes, workplaces, schools, and public spaces.
Our immediate partners have been gravely impacted.
- Garment workers, day laborers, and car wash workers have been targeted, in violation of their constitutional protections.
- David Huerta—UCLA Labor Center advisory board member, president of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW, and a widely-respected leader of California’s labor movement—was injured and detained on Friday while acting as a legal observer. Although he was released on Monday afternoon, he still faces federal charges.
- Attempts by a wide array of advocates, labor union and community members to exercise their right to peacefully protest have been met with the Trump administration’s disproportionate deployment of National Guard troops.
These attacks threaten our city’s right to safe, secure workplaces. They stand in opposition to the work and legacy of Rev. James Lawson, Jr., our beacon for nonviolent resistance, whose teachings remind us that domination, control, and violence will never solve the problem of prejudice, bias, and injustice.
We recognize the immense fear and uncertainty permeating our community. And yet, even in the face of these challenges, we are resilient. We are witnessing communities come together, support one another, and fight for justice with courage and conviction. Below, our staff has compiled a comprehensive list of immigration resources available to all community members. We encourage you to share this information widely.
Our city is powerful. The people of Los Angeles have shown up to fearlessly protect our workers and immigrant community—setting a national example of what it means to be in courageous nonviolent solidarity with one another.
On behalf of the UCLA Labor Center, we stand with this effort and remain committed to protecting immigrant and worker rights, regardless of the barriers in our path.
In solidarity,
UCLA Labor Center Steering Committee: Saba Waheed (Director), Evelyn Godinez, Ana Luz Gonzalez-Vasquez, Ju Hong, Tia Koonse, Melissa Mooney, Victor Narro, Gaspar Rivera-Salgado, Janna Shadduck-Hernández, Andrea Slater, Emily Jo Wharry
