Brian Justie

Brian Justie is a Senior Research Analyst at the UCLA Labor Center. He completed his PhD at UCLA in the Department of Information Studies, where he examined the impact of new technologies on work and workers. His doctoral research has been published in academic journals including Critical Inquiry, Internet Histories, and Logic. As a graduate student, he coauthored several reports with the Labor Center, including studies of working conditions in the gig economy and fast food industry, and served as a teaching assistant in the Labor Studies program.

As a staff researcher since spring 2023, he has worked on projects investigating automation in the supply chain and working conditions in LA County’s meatpacking plants. Continuing his ongoing inquiry into the relationship between technology and labor, he recently published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times analyzing emerging forms of automation in the service sector, and is currently planning a conference aimed at establishing a statewide worker-centered agenda for AI policy, in collaboration with the UC Berkeley Labor Center.

Brian is also an avid runner, regularly competing in local and national races, including a 9th-place finish in the 2024 Los Angeles Marathon.
