Please mark your calendar for Thursday, October 2, 2025 and reserve your ticket(s) below to join us in celebrating the UCLA Labor Center’s James Lawson Jr. Worker Justice Center reopening.

For 60 years, the UCLA Labor Center has been a trusted partner to California’s labor movement. Since 1964, we have provided cutting-edge, rapid-response labor research, technical assistance, and expert testimony to California policymakers and stakeholders on critical issues affecting our state’s vital industries.

In 2021, thanks to a $15 million state allocation and the support of leaders like California State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, UCLA purchased and rededicated the building in honor of Reverend James Lawson Jr., a civil and worker rights icon who taught labor studies at UCLA for 20 years and whose legacy continues to inspire our Center. Today, our worker-centered research and school-to-movement pathways prepare the labor and immigrant rights movements’ future leaders and build positive narratives of workers and our communities.

Donor advised funds (e.g., Fidelity gift fund) and corporate matching platforms (e.g., Benevity, OneCause, etc.) do not permit donors to receive benefits in exchange for gifts they’ve made. If you wish to receive the benefits from this event, please pay the entire amount for this event with a source of funds other than a donor advised fund or corporate matching platform.

Should this fund reach the campus minimum required for the establishment of an endowment or quasi-endowment, The UCLA Foundation reserves the right to convert this fund to an endowment or quasi-endowment. Gifts are managed and invested in accordance with UCLA’s endowment investment policies. The total return earned in excess of the amount approved annually for payout will be retained in the endowment principal to protect from the effects of inflation and to allow for growth. At the discretion of the appropriate campus official, when the payout is not needed for purposes of the fund, the return of payout may be added to the endowment fund principal. In the event the fund does not reach endowment minimum; or the program ceases to exist at UCLA, proceeds from the fund will be utilized in an area and manner as closely related as possible to the original intent and purposes for which the fund was established.

Although the Endowment is intended to exist in perpetuity, unforeseen circumstances may alter or remove the subject area from the campus academic plan or it may become impossible, impracticable or wasteful to administer. In such an event, the Chancellor is authorized to redesignate the purpose of the Endowment, after taking into consideration the designated endowment purpose.
